What is Compassionate Mind Training?

Compassionate Mind Training (CMT) is an 8-week structured program designed to help you build a kinder, more supportive relationship with yourself. Developed from Compassion Focused Therapy, it integrates insights from psychology, neuroscience, and mindfulness to help you understand how your mind works and why we can become stuck in patterns of self-criticism or distress.

This workshop is not problem-focused or limited to those in distress. Compassionate Mind Training is designed for anyone interested in personal growth, emotional resilience, and cultivating a kinder relationship with themselves and others. No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation in required.

Each weekly session introduces key ideas alongside guided practices such as mindfulness, soothing breathing, imagery, and compassion-focused exercises. These skills support the development of compassion toward yourself and others, helping to regulate emotions and improve overall wellbeing.

If you tend to be hard on yourself, feel stuck in worry or low mood, or just want to relate to yourself in a kinder way, this program offers a supportive place to start.

Over 8 weeks, you’ll learn simple, practical tools to help you slow down, understand your emotions, and respond to yourself with more care instead of criticism.

Many people find this work especially helpful for anxiety, depression, trauma, and body image concerns - though you do not have to be struggling to benefit.

Participants learn to:

Understand common patterns like self-criticism and emotional “loops”

Work with the three emotional systems (threat, drive, and soothing)

Develop self-compassion and reduce shame

Build practical tools for managing difficult thoughts and feelings

Strengthen resilience and emotional balance

Applying your compassionate mind to help balance threat-based emotions (ex: anger, anxiety, shame), reduce self-criticism, and manage distress

What to Expect
  • Learn how your brain is wired to respond to threat, pressure, and reward. We’ll explore why self-criticism, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm are so common — and how they make sense.

  • You’ll be introduced to simple and effective practices like soothing rhythm breathing and mindfulness to help calm your nervous system and create a sense of stability.

  • Develop skills to notice and respond to anxiety, low mood, shame, or self-doubt in a more supportive and manageable way.

  • Through guided imagery and reflection, you’ll begin to cultivate a more compassionate inner voice — one that is understanding, encouraging, and steady.

You will be introduced to a wide range of compassion-based practices, including imagery, compassionate thinking, and embodied exercises. This variety is intentional: each person’s experience is unique, and not every practice will resonate in the same way.

You are encouraged to explore these approaches with curiosity and openness, taking what feels supportive and relevant for your own life. The aim is not to do everything perfectly, but to gradually discover what helps you feel more grounded, supported, and connected to yourself.

Over time, this process can help you respond to challenges with greater kindness, resilience, and emotional balance—building a compassionate self that you can return to again and again.

  • Learn how to apply these skills in real-life situations — from relationships to body image, stress, and everyday challenges — so the work continues beyond the program.

  • Sessions include a mix of teaching, guided practices, personal reflection, and optional pair or group discussion. There is also home practice based on each week’s learning. You will receive recorded meditations, handouts, and slides before each session.

Participation is always encouraged but never forced — you are welcome to engage at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
